From the Executive Director's Desk: May Is Community Action Awareness Month

By Carolyn VanderGiesen

We want to convey our appreciation to the staff and volunteers at local Community Action Agencies in New Mexico for the important work YOU are doing for the low-income citizens of New Mexico. You provide valuable services and support to those New Mexicans who are struggling to become self-sufficient.

Ask a Community Action Agency if you need assistance! We promise they will be there for you.

History Tells Us...
When the War on Poverty was in its infancy, Community Action was a bold idea. The Economic Opportunity Act of 1964 was the innovative legislation born from President Johnson’s vision to fight poverty in America. The Community Action idea handed control to the state and local level where programs and services were designed for individuals within the targeted area. Prior to this period the Federal Government controlled social programs. Throughout America Community Action led the fight against poverty at the local level. After nearly 50 years this model still exists!!

Remember to contact a Community Action Agency if you need assistance. Click here for contact information for our state-wide agencies -- CAASNM, MWNMCAP, SNMCAC, EPCAA, HELP-NM.

Overall giving was up by 18% from 2011-2012, with social giving (fundraising events and peer-to-peer) and branded giving pages generating the most donation dollars
Donors are more likely to give when they feel an emotional connection to the cause (stories sell)
Stories about children and about animals generate the most activity (shares, likes, comments) on social networking sites, creating engagement with potential donors

Customers signing up in person and over the phone include the elderly, recently unemployed, disabled, and working people who can no longer afford a cell phone. Please help promote our program by telling family and friends who participate in at least one public assistance program. Region VI CAA 2013 Conference

Date: October 25
Location: Northwest Arkansas Holiday Inn in Springdale, Arkansas
Schedule to be announced.

Region VI Association of Community Action

Region VI is a network of community action agencies providing a unified voice for the region and a conference platform for training and technical assistance. Membership is open to all agencies and state associations in Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas.

The Oklahoma Association of Community Action Agencies (OKACAA) recently announced the completion of a new website for the Region VI Association. Tricia Auberle, RPIC Program Director for the Region VI Regional Performance and Innovation Consortia (RPIC) Grant, stated OKACAA will maintain a calendar of state and regional events that is available for everyone to view. This will allow local agencies to consider potential conflicts when scheduling activities. The site also hosts a Training Request page. The RPIC will work with the state association to identify training resources on the topics requested and advise the requesting agency of their findings.
