January 2012

Looking back at 2011, there were so many notable Elva achievements topped of course by the publication of the ELVA book which has since received much acclaim and will most certainly bring the Elva name back to the premier league amongst motorsport enthusiasts worldwide.

The latest edition of UK magazine Classic & Sports Car contains a feature on GT160 #3 which includes excellent images of this stunning car so fondly remembered by many, with this example having been beautifully rebuilt and modified by Pace Products for current owner Michael Birch. While it is no longer the car I rescued and restored some twenty years ago, having been updated and modified to full race specification , the latest work has resulted in the car being accepted for the Le Mans Classic later this year. Some of the details in the article are not historically accurate, however the interview with the GT160 stylist Trevor Fiore is informative with TF quoted as saying "I'd love to redo the Elva for 2012". There would be much interest and enthusiasm for that Trevor!

"Inside The Paddock ... Racing Car Transporters at Work" is a new book that has already received rave reviews despite currently being unattainable due to delivery issues from printers in the Far East. The book by David Cross and Bjorn Kjer is about the way in which racing cars appeared at circuits and the wonderful transporter vehicles used. Contains superb images and of course Elva is included. There are ordering facilities via Dalton Watson Fine Books or Amazon.

Le-Mans-Courier

I have been delighted to hear from various Elva people who have made contact as a result of the ELVA book, and the 'names' include ...

David McMullan who was the Sales Manager during the Trojan days. Ray Terry who very successfully campaigned a Mk.VIIS BMW and later a Buick powered Mk.VIIIS on the hills. Barry Boardman who raced the Le Mans Courier pictured at Silverstone in '65. Liz and Mike Brown who owned the V6 powered prototype 'Cougar' using it to explore Europe. There will be more stories to tell from these and other people soon.

The auction website eBay continues to attract attention with various Elva cars being offered for sale. Most recently 'KDY 68' the prototype Mk.II 'works' car which fell just short of the reserve price being bid close to £90K, and the long stored 1962 Courier coupe which although needing a comprehensive rebuild was sold at £6,655 far exceeding expectations.

I expect to be at Race Retro 24-26th February Stoneleigh Park ... maybe see you there?

Please keep the news, words and pictures coming.
