The Days of Awe

The Jewish New Year, Rosh Hashanah, begins this Wednesday evening, and the Day of Atonement, Yom Kippur, begins the evening of September 13. The ten days between these two pillars of the year are the Days of Awe. They are a chance to rethink our year, review our behavior, and return to our core tradition and values before we stand on Yom Kippur to ask for forgiveness and to live another year. Below are some books to guide, support, and encourage us in this process. May each of you be inscribed for "a good year, a year of peace."

Horn Dara (c) Michael B. Priest

“What do computerized data storage, sibling rivalry, the Book of Ruth, and Egyptian uncertainty after the Arab Spring have in common? They’re all part of this latest work about two crucial aspects of being human: the ability to remember and to love. Horn has already proven herself by being named one of Granta’s Best Young American Novelists and winning two National Jewish Book Awards. A sure bet.” — Library Journal

Jewish LearningWorks' One Bay One Book, a project of the Jewish Community Library, connects readers to one another in shared discussions, events, and informal conversations around the themes of a single book. Read about it in the J Weekly!

The Library and our One Bay One Book partners will offer book discussions and community events related to A Guide for the Perplexed throughout the year. Please contact Allison Green at ajgreen@jewishlearningworks.org or 415.567.3327 ext. 703 to learn more. If you are affiliated with an organization, ask how you can become a community partner.

If you are part of a book group, consider making A Guide for the Perplexed one of your books for discussion this year. A limited number of book sets will be lent free of charge on a first come, first served basis through the Library's Book Club in a Box program. For information, call 415.457.3327 ext. 706.
