Dear friends and supporters all over the world:

I have followed the suggestion from many of you to finally put together a little letter to keep you in the loop on what is happening in my studio and beyond. I would like to keep in touch with you occasionally from wherever I happen to live and work. This first newsletter is coming from my new studio in Berlin after having moved here this summer from New York. It is so new that I have not made any new work here yet, but it is full of promise! I hope to share some new work with you soon.

You'll find contact at the bottom of the newsletter. Being an artist is a solitary job yet always has to be in dialogue withe the world around in order to grow and blossom. So keep in touch!

Yours,
Jaanika

Head sõbrad ja toetajad:

See minu esimene atlejee uudiskiri jõuab teieni Berliinist kuhu New Yorgist peale ilusat suve Eestis kolisin.

Ikka teie,
Jaanika

"The Silence of Forest Sounds" at Haus Gallery

My exhibition in my hometown Tallinn, Estonia is up for a few more days until September 27th. Please visit if nearby! I am exhibiting graphite and wax pigment drawings of various scale along with Tuuli Mann's paintings. We had a live video and drawing performance in conjunction with the show. Take a look at the picture of it below. The exhibition received a wonderful review by Heie Treier which can be read in English here and in Estonian from September KesKus newpsaper or from the article photo below. More info on the exhibition here .

What a lovely chance to see so many of my nordic friends old and new in Tallinn at the opening and performance! Tänud tulemast!

In Brief

"Drawn To Experience" Group Exhibition

In September I was happy to exhibit my work for the first time ever in Australia as part of the Drawn to Experience group exhibition at POP Gallery, Queensland College of Art in Brisbane. This international exhibition was curated by Kellie O'Dempsey and focused especially on drawings made in the context of performance. It is an honor to be included in this group of six fine artists including Morgan O'Hara and Tony Orrico, showing my video as well as the drawing made at the Dorsky Museum, New Paltz, NY.

Works in Collections

I find it very rewarding when I can follow the life of my works after they have been acquired by collectors. Whenever possible I pay a visit to the works in their new homes and am curious to hear how they have been behaving with their new owners. This summer I visited my Maelstrom 35 at its location and was happy to learn the work has been opening up more and more to the collectors in the two years they have owned it. Sure enough—while having a cup of coffee nearby, the work showed itself from a new angle to me as well. Some drawings just seem to be in the process of becoming forever!

A Published Conversation

One warm night when still in New York I sat down with Kris Lillemets in an East Village bar and discussed art and life. It was an interesting experience to talk to an Estonian reporter while knowing that the interview will be published in English plus being Estonian. Having lived 15 years in the US makes it easier to talk about certain art-related things in English. So as a result we went back and forth between the two languages.
Here is what we decided was fit for the public eye:
Appreciating the Shades of Grey

Art From Around the Baltic Sea

One of the most exotic places I have had my work exhibited is Kaliningrad, a landlocked outpost of Russia on the Baltic Sea. The vast drawing and print exhibition featuring artists from around the Baltic sea countries is up and running right now until October 15, 2013. I extend my warm thanks to Estonian curator Inga Heamägi who is paving my path into the Russian art scene for the second year in a row and I look forward to seeing the catalogue featuring all the hundreds of works in the exhibition Kaliningrad Königsberg 2013.

A Fine Find

During Berlin Art Week the city was full of tourists, artists and events. My favorite find was Finnish artist Mikko Rikala's first solo exhibition in Berlin at Gallery Taik Persons. Two Nordic artists whose work stems from nature find each other even in the thicket of a million other works of art. Thank you, Mikko!

"Art making, whether it is literature, music, visual art or any other form, to me, is one of the most important humanistic attempts to reconcile the gap between our secular, practical self and that being which nature endowed as a powerful, mysterious existence as big and complex as nature itself. I take it seriously although with a great amount of playfulness and freedom."
