Dear St. Andrew's Families,

It's good to be back and see the students do what they have learned to do so well. We came together on Tuesday morning in the chapel where Tad challenged everyone to recommit to being our best selves and support each other's efforts.

Since then I've seen the entire swim team enthusiastically cheer on a teammate through the finish line of a 500 freestyle race, watch a group of III Formers take their first steps in learning to play the violin, and sat in wonder listening to the newest diversity leaders describe their experience at the National Association of Independent Schools' Student Diversity Leadership Conference.

There's much more to come in the days ahead and we'll do our best to share it with you.

Sincerely,
Will Robinson ‘97

Special Polar Bear Event

The Polar Bears usually jump on the last day of the month, but they didn't want to miss the opportunity to chop through the ice during the historic deep freeze.

In the Classroom

Members of Great Books, a minor History course offered to IV Formers, celebrated their last day critiquing Zeitoun by Dave Eggers. The book follows the story of one man who chose to stay in New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina. They're smiling despite uncertainty around the main character's actions or the choices Eggers makes along the way in telling the story.

The students are in the process of finishing their own piece of historical non-fiction with topics ranging from relatives arriving on Ellis Island and in Cuban labor camps to Winnie Mandela's reaction to Nelson Mandela's passing. One student wrote the story of the first three-time winner of the Westminster Dog Show from the perspective of (who else?) the dog.

Environmental Stewardship

Friday afternoon means a meeting of the environmental stewards in the Main Common Room with Ben & Jerry's ice cream. The group takes the initiative to educate the community around environmental issues and brainstorms ways to make the community more environmentally sustainable.

Luke Baumann '15 recently led the charge to replace incandescent bulbs with LEDs in Engelhard Hall. The switch will save approximately $2,400 and eliminate 17.5 metric tons of CO2 from the atmosphere every year.
