Pete on track adjusted 468

This photo by our friend and musician, David Bernz, made us cry when we saw it on Saturday.

Dear friends.

We can't believe it, either.

This amazing man--and our dear friend--Pete Seeger is gone.

The day after he passed, Sandy wrote on our FaceBook page:

"This is a time of deep sadness for us, and also a time of deep gratitude to Pete, for all he was and all he did through his life and his music. Pete was a friend and mentor to us and especially to Pat. She was with Pete and his family these last two days and helped to sing Pete on his way back to Toshi. Thank you all for your love and your beautiful messages to us. The photo (below) is from our last visit with Pete at his home, 3 weeks ago. Peace and love to you all from Pat and me"

Pete and Pat on Jan 6th

When we saw Pete back at the beginning of January, he was recovering from surgery but seemed to be doing quite well. We found him out in the winter weather taking a walk with his daughter and her dog. He knew who we were, remembered being at our wedding 12 years ago, remembered Pat's song, "Swimming to the Other Side" and told us wonderful historical stories, as he always did.

So we were shocked when he took such a turn for the worse just a few weeks later. As soon as Pat learned Pete was back in the hospital, she came up. We are both so grateful that she had the chance to be with him and the family in his last days.

Song for Pete

We then stayed on in Beacon NY, Pete's hometown, being with friends and Pete's family through this first, really tough week. We are grateful for the power of love and connection to help ease the feelings of shock and loss.

And, the power of music, too.

This past week, we sang together with Pete's family. We gathered with the Beacon community to sing his songs, as so many did in their communities around the world.

And we wrote "Sing People Sing", Pat's tribute to Pete. Pat started it the day after Pete passed and, on Sunday, we sang it at the small, local visitation to remember him. People started singing along with the chorus:

"Oh, hear the banjo ring
Hear the people sing
Hope changes everything
Sing people sing"

We have already received many wonderful posts from folks who have heard and been moved by the song. And we are honored by the many notes of love and support for our work, linking us with carrying Pete's work forward. Thanks to Rebecca who wrote on FaceBook:

"Lift up our communal voices, 'Sing People Sing', thank you Emma's Revolution for continuing Pete's legacy!"

We hope you'll listen, sing along and add your love for Pete and Toshi to ours.

We'll have more about Pete in our next enewsletter and, if you hadn't already heard the NPR "All Things Considered" story on Pat's song "Swimming to the Other Side," which featured Pete, you can still here it at this link. Thanks to Lesley for letting us know that NPR changed the link.

Back Home

We are now back in Maryland, still holding Pete and his family and friends close in our hearts, as we start to enter back into our lives.

This week, we'll be making Pat's Homemade Organic Toffee for your Valentine's Day gifting. (And, yes, anyone who knew Pete knew he had a major sweet tooth. We brought him a little box of Pat's toffee back at the beginning of January and we loved watching him eat it, one piece after the other, until he had finished it all.)

And next week, we'll head back out on the road for our concerts and concerts with Holly Near.

As always--but even more so now--we thank you for your love and support of us, our music and our work in the world.

Made with organic and fair-trade ingredients

Order by midnight Sat Feb 8th

We're so glad you're loving the Pat's Homemade Organic Fair-Trade Toffee!

We made 29.5 lbs of it in for your Xmas holidays orders and now we're ready to make more for you for Valentine's Day, so that someone you know and love (hey, maybe it's you) can enjoy it like our friend and her brother did in December:

“I just HAD to let you know, my brother REALLY liked your toffee. I took it over to the house in a bowl with the intention of having it included in what we had for dessert. While, my brother and I were cooking dinner, I pointed it out. Admittedly I had a few pieces as I was cooking. shortly before we sat down for dinner, I noticed the bowl was COMPLETELY empty. I looked at him and asked if the kids got into it or if he ate it all... he kind of sheepishly acknowledged he ate it!! : ) … ”

Order by midnight Saturday Feb 9th and this delicious toffee will be sent in a gift box to you or your Valentine's giftee. Orders will ship by Tues Feb 11th.
