Dear Families,
Our thoughts continue to be with those of you still dealing with the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. Please contact your child's advisor or anyone on campus to let us know if we can do anything to help you.

It has been an inspiring week at St. Andrew's. Parents Weekend was once again a beautiful example of the power of hard work and dedication on the part of students and faculty. We are still working on photos from the weekend, but managed to upload videos of the performances, Chris Nikoi's wonderful Sunday talk, and Chad Spencer's presentation on financial aid in the college process.

Hurricane Sandy spared us in many ways and we thank the dedicated men and women of Sage dining services and our Health Center, Officer Phil Davis and his security team and everyone that made tremendous personal sacrifices to make sure students remained safe and secure through the storm. If the best communities come together during times of crisis then we should all be thankful to be a part of the physical and spiritual community of St. Andrew's.

All the best,
Will Robinson '97

Election Season

Students took part in a mock election held yesterday by Emily Pressman and the History Department as part of a nationwide effort to gauge student opinions on the presidential election and a series of specific issues, including energy, the role of money in campaigns, a nuclear Iran, a federal marriage amendment, universal healthcare, and reducing the federal deficit. With exception of the 2004 election, St. Andrew's students have correctly predicted the outcome of every presidential election since 1988.

The community was also treated to math teacher Pemberton Heath's breakdown of the current presidential election polling with an eye toward the differences between national and aggregated state polls.

Election night watch parties are already taking shape across campus to allow students to further engage.

"Lean On Me"

You really never know what is going to happen any minute of the day with these students and their collective energy. Thanks to Bernadette Devine for capturing this spontaneous sing-along today after lunch in the Main Common Room. (I love that this video features kids from Florida, Texas, North Carolina, Ghana, and New Hampshire.)

Is It Ethical to Eat Animals?

That was the questioned posed last night by math and science teacher and philosopher Dr. Harvey Johnson in an open forum discussing the ethical basis of veganism. Terence Gilheany asked Harvey to lead the discussion as part of his RS6 Applied Ethics class.
