Did You Know?

Fredericksburg has its own special version of the Easter Bunny story dating back to 1847.

According to the legend, founder John Meusbach and other early settlement leaders rode out to make a peace treaty with the neighboring Comanche tribe. As the treaty was being drawn up, Comanche warriors communicated through smoke signals. Pioneer mothers calmed their frightened children by explaining the signal fires were made by the Easter Bunny, who was busily dying eggs for Easter day. Beginning the following year, the Easter fires were re-enacted to celebrate Easter and the peace treaty. Over the years, the Fredericksburg Easter Fires grew into a pageant. The pageantry ended in 2005, but returns in 2013!
