Greetings!

This has been a brutal winter for many in the United States so it’s good to know there are only a few more weeks left until spring arrives. I think it will be very welcomed this year!

Winter is a good time to do “indoor” tasks, including refreshing or revamping your blog and/or website. For ideas on this, read below.

My next How to Write Your Blog workshop will take place on April 1. Check here for details and registration. Additionally, I am planning to hold an advanced workshop in the late spring/early summer for those who have taken the current workshop and those who wish to work a bit more in-depth. If you would be interested, or know somebody who is, please send me a note including thoughts on what you would want to focus on.

Best wishes,
Deborah

Five actions to refresh your blog or website

You can refresh your blog and website at any time, but why not start the year off right?

1. The first and easiest thing you should do is make sure to update your copyright information to reflect 2014.
2. Review your policies and terms such as your privacy policy and your blog comments policy. If you don’t already have these, perhaps it’s time to consider putting something in writing.
3. Conduct a visual audit of your website. Does everything look the way it should? Have you checked it on other browsers? If you always use Firefox perhaps you can check it on Chrome and Safari.
4. Conduct a content audit of your website. Is everything up to date? Do you have any new clients or projects? New staff members? Is your contact information current? Have you added any services? Is there anything that needs a bit of extra attention?
5. For those of you using WordPress, the easiest way to refresh your site is to review your plugins. You may wish to delete those you are not using, and perhaps replace some. There are so many ways to make your blog work for you. I recently added WP Biographia, which allows me to have custom author paragraph at the bottom of my posts that displays my bio and contact information. This plugin is really helpful for blogs with multiple authors.

Communications tip: Ask questions!

Before you start any new communications project, be it a website landing page or a press release or anything else, be sure to ask the right questions. Too many communications projects fail to achieve their mission because they have no discernible goal. In some cases, projects are simply repeats of what has been done before and failed.

Stop wasting time and ask some strategic questions. For some pointers, please read my blog post: Stop! Don't start on that next project until you can answer this.
