Sherri Says....

BAG IT is celebrating its 10th Anniversary this year! Everyone likes a good story, and BAG IT has one…

Once upon a time there was an idea to help cancer patients “Fight the Fear”……

I conceptualized BAG IT in 2001 along with Maureen Hatten and our oncologist Dr. Donald Brooks. By 2003, the first BAG IT bag was delivered and 750 cancer patients and their families were helped that first year.

BAG IT was a kitchen enterprise from 2003 until 2007. Friends, family, and volunteers helped order publications and gathered monthly in our kitchen to assemble BAG IT resources. My husband Joe and I delivered BAG IT around Tucson.

But then BAG IT demand exploded and expanded statewide in 2007. I quit teaching to become a full time employee. We hired part-time staff, and began to outsource assembly and storage.

BAG IT has helped 45,000 cancer patients and their families in Arizona over the past ten years. We continue to be dedicated to help people “Fight the Fear” of a cancer diagnosis and treatment.

...... now it's all in the bag.

BeThere

Fifteen teams of enthusiastic amateur chiliheads and professional chefs duked it out for bragging rights at the 2nd Annual Be There for BAG IT Chili Challenge at the Arizona Biltmore in Phoenix. The clock was set for 75 minutes of intense competition as each team was tasked with making a chili masterpiece from scratch (think Iron Chef here) AND come up with a clever jingle, dance or other creative expression of their team (keepin’ it clean!).

Then the aprons and mitts came off for a friendly game of
“toss the BAG IT bean bag” (AKA cornhole but we like our name better)
which also earned teams points in the challenge.

After each team showcased their work to our fine panel of judges and the very last bean was counted, kudos went to:

As for BAG IT, our victory was the opportunity to spend a fun afternoon with so many of the good folks in Phoenix who support BAG IT through their sponsorship of the event as well as our mission to help newly diagnosed individuals with cancer and their families “Fight the Fear.”

21stCentury

Be There for BAG IT Chili Challenge raised enough money to provide BAG IT bags to more than 1,000 newly diagnosed cancer patients in Maricopa County and their families. We are most grateful to our Presenting Sponsor, 21st Century Oncology of Arizona, and all of the sponsors and in-kind donors who made this possible. We could not do it without you!

Won’t you plan to “Be There” next year for the 3rd Annual Battle of the Beans?

Do you or someone in your office distribute BAG IT to your patients? Please read or pass on!
As you know, BAG IT was designed to help anyone newly diagnosed with cancer and their family right at or soon after diagnosis --- when they need information the most.
During such an overwhelming time the natural inclination may be to “wait until later” to give a bag or only offer a bag to those who seem “ready” for it. Please resist that temptation and automatically provide a BAG IT bag to each patient and/or caregiver on the first visit. In that way it won’t be forgotten during treatment and they or their family/caregiver will have it when they need it.

epicrides

BAG IT was the primary beneficiary of this great mountain bike event where thousands of volunteers, participants, sponsors, and vendors worked and rode tirelessly through the night to make this extravaganza one of their best ever.

Summit-Hut-Logo-Color

A portion of the registration fee and all of the donations to enter the Epic raffle for great prizes from Summit Hut raised enough funds to provide approximately 350 BAG IT bags in our community.

Next year we plan to build a BAG IT team to ride in the event.
