There's a great site for educators, a link to a provider of apps especially designed for non profits, a couple of videos about managing stress ... and lots more!

You may also enjoy browsing some of our recent blog posts - and don't forget to visit our Events Calendar to see what's on.

We hope you'll find at least one or two useful and interesting snippets among this month's offerings.

Scootle

scootle

Scootle is an excellent resource for Australian educators, providing a huge range of learning and teaching materials aligned to the National Curriculum. Scootle is "a content discovery portal containing more than 16,000 teaching resources. It includes features that support teachers to organise digital content and lessons."

All Catholic, independent and government schools in the Australian Capital Territory, Northern Territory, South Australia, Tasmania, Western Australia and Victoria, and teachers in Catholic and independent schools in New South Wales and Queensland, can access Scootle. Teachers in New South Wales and Queensland government schools currently access the national digital curriculum resources via their own statewide e-learning environments. These states will provide Scootle access to their teachers in the near future. Faculty and students at Australian universities and TAFEs, and members of licensed professional associations, can also access Scootle.

There is no charge to access Scootle resources, but you will need to register on the site using an education email address - for example .gov.au or .edu.au. If you are an educator but don't have an email address with a common teaching extension, or if you need further assistance, email their support team at: help@scootle.edu.au

First People's Disability Network Australia

FPDNA

The First People's Disability Network (Australia) FPDN is the national peak disability organisation representing Aboriginal people with disabilities and their families.

Our aim is to be a strong voice of and for Aboriginal people with disabilities and their families. We do this using a range of strategies including providing advice to government and educating both the government and non-government sectors about how the unmet needs of Aboriginal people with disabilities can be met.

We also seek to address the stigma that some Aboriginal people with disabilities may experience by having our members who are Aboriginal people with disabilities themselves speaking about their experiences.

In some ways disability is a new conversation in many Aboriginal communities. The vast majority of Aboriginal people with disabilities do not self-identify as people with disabilities. This continues to occur for a range of reasons these include:

The fact that in traditional language there was no comparable word for 'disability'. This would suggest that disability was accepted as part of the human experience;
Much of the terminology within the disability sector many Aboriginal people with disabilities and their families are not familiar with;
Some families are reluctant to seek help because they fear that they may be judged unfairly and possibly have their family member taken away;
And a reluctance to take on a perceived negative label of disability particularly if they already experience discrimination based on their Aboriginality.*

The Art and Science of Online Engagement

online-engagement

Next Tuesday, 28 May, from 2pm to 3pm EST, Pro Bono Australia is hosting a no-cost 60-minute interactive webinar on ‘The Art and Science of Online Engagement & Fundraising’.

Presented by Managing Director of Engonet, Nigel Hokin, this webinar will cover the what and how of online engagement for not-for-profit organisations. Engonet is a specialist web platform provider for the NFP sector - so you may possibly expect some promotion and marketing as part of the deal. :)

But the webinar should nevertheless be a valuable source of ideas and information. It promises to discuss the key principles of online engagement and use examples of world-class NFPs to provide actionable strategies on how you too can achieve this.

It will cover:
* How to understand the three pillars of an online ecosystem
* What the 'must have' online engagement capabilities are for NFPs
* Learning from the best! Case studies in online engagement and fundraising
* How and where small-to-mid sized NFPs can access advanced online engagement and fundraising capabilities

If this is of interest for you or others in your organisation, you can register here.

Stress Management 101

stress

Stress is a fact of life. Whether 'good' stress - the kind that pushes and motivates us to succeed - or 'bad' stress that debilitates us, we all experience it in various ways.

Here are two YouTube videos that not only provide excellent food for thought about managing our levels of stress, but also cover many practical and common sense tips about how to do so.

Firstly, a short 11 minute 'animated' talk by Dr Mike Evans: The Single Most Important Thing You Can Do for Your Stress

The second is a lecture by Dr. Martin Rossman: Imaginative Solutions for Stress Relief. Much longer at 1.5 hours altogether (including questions and discussion) but well worth watching!

The Conversation

news

It can be challenging to find independent and non-partisan news sources these days - but The Conversation is an attempt to provide exactly that. Launched in March 2011, The Conversation is an independent source of news and views, sourced from the academic and research community and delivered direct to the public.

Access to independent, high-quality, authenticated, explanatory journalism underpins a functioning democracy.

Our aim is to allow for better understanding of current affairs and complex issues. And hopefully allow for a better quality of public discourse and conversations.

All their authors and editors sign up to their Editorial Charter and must abide by their Community Standards Policy. Contributors must also disclose any funding they receive and any potential conflicts of interest - at risk of being banned from contributing if they do not.

Their newsroom is based in Melbourne, and they also have editors in Sydney, Canberra, and Brisbane. They are wholly owned by The Conversation Media Trust, a not-for-profit company.

YACVic

YACVic

The Youth Affairs Council of Victoria Inc. (YACVic) is the peak body and leading policy advocate on young people's issues in Victoria. And for anyone in Victoria who works with young people, as well as for young people themselves, the YACVIc website is a great resource for all the latest youth sector news, resources and information. We've mentioned YACVic many times in Starlink over the years - but we thought it worth mentioning the site again, just in case some of our newer subscribers aren't familiar with it. :)
