As her classmates look on, Joan Mideva, age 14, creates pictures using banana bark, glue, and paper.

Student Artist Gives Back

When Joan Mideva’s father died of AIDS, her mother was left with five children to raise, in a small town in Western Kenya. At age 7, Joan, the youngest of the five, enrolled at Crossroads Springs; that day, her whole world grew brighter. CSI opened doors for Joan through care and encouragement, nurturing not only her growth as a student, but also her growth as an individual and as a member of a community.

Today Joan is 14 years old and in 8th grade. She will sit for her Primary Education exam in November and is looking forward to secondary school in January 2014. And, she is already “giving back” to CSI in her own special way.

Through the opportunities offered at CSI, Joan has discovered new talents and is creating banana bark pictures, a traditional Sub-Saharan art form. She gives her artwork to US volunteers, who in turn create note cards to sell at CSI fundraisers. Joan says, “I have been so fortunate and I want the other children at CSI to be educated well and to achieve their goals.”

Today there are 367 children enrolled at CSI. Our challenge is to provide every child at CSI with an opportunity to confidently follow in Joan’s footsteps—-to learn, grow, dream of a bright future, and make an impact on his or her community.

For information about sponsoring a student, see below in this newsletter, see our website (crossroadsspringsafrica.org), or send an email to ahyde37492@aol.com with Crossroads Springs in the subject line.

Girls' Dorm Complete

GIRLSFOR DORM sm

The most vulnerable girls at Crossroads Springs now have a safe haven! We are celebrating completion of a two-story dorm for 60 girls and a housemother. Solar panels supply electricity and pump water. Features include bedrooms with two bunk beds in each room, toilets and showers on each floor, laundry room with sinks and clotheslines open to the fresh air, housemother’s bedroom, and a communal room for homework and group meetings. Locally built furnishings will be installed before the girls move in to begin the school year in January 2014. We predict many happy students! Rooms in the original dorm building will house the boys. Separating girls and boys in residence is a requirement of the Ministry of Education, Government of Kenya.

We are deeply grateful for the generosity and assistance of the following:

• Architect Heather Nemec

• Richard and Janet Post Fund
• Segal Family Foundation
• Mr. John Mayeiku, OMA construction supervisor, Kisumu, Kenya
• Access:Energy, alternative energy NGO, Kisumu, Kenya

Creative Giving

The youngest girls at Crossroads Springs smile in their new dresses (below), made by women of North Presbyterian Church in Williamsville, NY, and their friends. Our heartfelt thanks to the women in Williamsville, and also to these church groups: The Sunday school at Orchard Park, NY, Presbyterian Church collected books, bookmarks, and a dollar toward postage for the CSI kids; and the Children's Chorale of Christ's Lutheran Church in Woodstock, NY, presented an original production, "Master's Peace Theater," to benefit their friends in Kenya.

Have You Seen an Impala?

093

Most of the children at Crossroads Springs have not seen an impala, the African animal for which Kenya is famous. During a special field trip in October, the Class 8 students visited Impala Park in Kisumu (an hour away) where they were awestruck, viewing impala, giraffe, and many other beautiful animals. They also saw planes for the first time and wrote enthusiastic, descriptive essays about their great day! Please help support extracurricular activities such as Scouts, music competitions, and this special field trip.
