Summer Recital Series: Produced in association with SummerStage and the NYC Department of Parks & Recreation, The Met's Summer Recital Series returns to Socrates for its third season, featuring three talented young Met singers performing arias and duets from a variety of operas.

During the summer months and other times throughout the year the Noguchi Museum is open late on the first Friday of the month, with extended hours from 5:00 to 8:00pm.
First Friday programming includes, Center of Attention, an extended conversation with a Museum educator about a single work in the collection at 6:00pm, followed by a film series curated in collaboration with the Architecture and Design Film Festival. First Fridays also offer a cash beer and wine bar.
Admission on First Fridays is pay-what-you-wish during normal museum hours and FREE from 5:00 to 8:00pm.

Enjoy some great eats, find a hidden treasure in the market, discover new artists and great local vendors all while taking in breathtaking views of the Manhattan skyline.

Walk-up paddling at Anable Basin (end of 5th Street) -- Adjacent to the LIC Food and Flea Market. No reservation required, no experience needed. All ages are welcome, but minors under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Participants must be able to swim. Wear clothing and footwear that can get wet.
If it is necessary to cancel due to dangerous weather, unsafe water quality or other circumstance, a cancellation notice will be posted on this calendar and on the Boathouse hotline, (718) 228-9214, two hours before the scheduled starting time.
The first day of the 5th annual Astoria Park Shore Fest 2013 is on August 4 2013! It's the We Heart Astoria Food Fest, so come and join the fun with food from local restaurants, live music from local band CatGut and others, ping pong, Ukelele Social, and a chance to enjoy strolling or sitting on a car-free Shore Boulevard. The event is sponsored by the Astoria Park Alliance and We Heart Astoria.

CONSTRUCTION AND RESTORATION OF THE QUEENSBRIDGE SEAWALL HAS BEGUN!
Groundbreaking of the Queensbridge Seawall Restoration on May 10, 2013.
After over ten years of inaccessibility and disrepair, the Parks Department held a groundbreaking for the restoration and construction of the Queensbridge Park Seawall on May 10, 2013.
It is estimated that construction will take a year to complete and we will post photos and updates about the work and its progress here and on our website.

BIG! COMPOST
BIG!Compost, a program of Build It Green! NYC, is a community-scale composting network, that works to increase capacity for, acceptance of, and participation in composting in western Queens. We serve the public by hosting weekly and event-specific food scrap drop-offs, training community members in urban composting best practices, and providing high-quality compost to amend our city’s soils. The finished compost is used in community gardens, on street trees, and in public beautification projects.

The Visitor Center at Newtown Creek tells the story of New York City’s water and wastewater systems. Located at the Newtown Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant (WTP), one of New York City's 14 treatment plants, the Visitor Center features DEP employees who narrate the cycle of water from water supply to distribution, wastewater treatment, and harbor water quality. This fascinating new facility will help you learn about the one billion gallons of water New Yorkers use every day, the thousands of miles of pipes, aqueducts, and water mains, and the responsibilities, through the eyes of our dedicated workforce, to serve New Yorkers.

In collaboration with Independent Curators International (ICI), Socrates Sculpture Park presents do it (outside), an exhibition conceived of and curated by Hans Ulrich Obrist. With historical antecedents in Dada and Fluxus, do it (outside) is a selection of artists' instructions interpreted by other artists, performers, community groups, and the public. In the last 20 years, versions of do it have been presented in over 50 venues worldwide, giving new meaning to the concept of the “Exhibition in Progress.” do it (outside) at Socrates Sculpture Park will be the first presentation of the exhibition in New York City and the first to be presented completely outdoors in a public art venue.

Waterfront Vision Plan for Astoria & Long Island City, Queens
The Waterfront Vision Plan was created for the community and by the community with Green Shores NYC & The Trust for Public Land.
In the summer and fall of 2010, hundreds of Western Queens residents came together to participate in seven neighborhood listening sessions, two area-wide brainstorming sessions and a waterfront bus tour generating more than a thousand comments, ideas and solutions for creating a more connected, useful and beautiful waterfront.
