Empowering Poor Women with Affordable Sanitary Pads

Only 2% of women in India use sanitary products during their monthly cycle. Nine of every ten women instead use rags, plastics, san and ash to manage their period. This leads to pain, infection, and maternal health complications, along with embarrassment and lowered self-esteem. Many women suffer through an “unclean” period in which they limit their interactions with others, withdraw from whatever work they may have, and suffer through the emotional pain associated with the absence of basic human dignity.

Mobile Schools: Where Street Kids and Execs Find a Win-Win

As a grad­u­ate from the Uni­ver­sité Catholique de Lou­vain and Belgium native, I am very excited to spot­light Mobile School. This social entre­pre­neur­ship story started in 1996 when Arnoud Raskin, its founder, returned to Belgium after six months in Colombia as an edu­ca­tor, deter­mined to make a change in the daily life of street kids.

With five field studies under his belt, Professor Gordon Adomdza is now a seasoned veteran in leading students abroad to research and develop tools for the base of the pyramid (BOP). In the recent decade, designers have been using the human centered design (HCD) process at the BOP as a new tool to solve old problems.

Millennium Campus Conference

The 5th annual Millennium Campus Conference will be held at Northeastern University on November 1-2, 2013. MCC2013 is a con­fer­ence focused on stu­dent orga­niz­ing around the United Nations Mil­len­nium Devel­op­ment Goals. The week­end is designed to pro­vide atten­dees with the knowl­edge, skills, inspi­ra­tion and space for crit­i­cal self-reflection they need as stu­dent lead­ers to effec­tively exe­cute their on-campus and over­seas projects in the com­ing year. MCC is also a place for those inter­ested in becom­ing part of the stu­dent move­ment to end global poverty.

Social Entrepreneurship Institute

Presented by Unite For Sight, the Social Entrepreneurship Institute provides mentoring, guidance, and successful strategies for participants to apply to their work in global health, social entrepreneurship, and international development. In addition to unique interactive sessions by leaders in global health and social entrepreneurship, the Institute also includes breakfast, lunch, and dinner networking receptions with the speakers. The event will take place on December 6, 2013 in New Haven, CT.
