Meet the Doctor: Jill Stoller MD - Child Health Champion and Dog Trainer!
We bet you didn’t know that Dr. Stoller has a second career as an amateur dog trainer! When the Stoller family’s first dog, Rosey, passed away from cancer at the ripe old age of 14, Dr. Stoller knew a new dog was needed to make the family whole again. The Stollers welcomed Tia, a mixed-breed rescue who was found abandoned in the woods in South Carolina and saved from a high-kill shelter by a rescue group from Long Island.
Tia was eight months old when she joined the Stoller family in December of 2012. Dr. Stoller didn’t quite realize what she had gotten into. Though Tia was very friendly to both people and other dogs, she was a bit of a ‘wild child’ and it was clear that she would need a lot of training. Tia also thought the Stoller’s cats were fuzzy toys to chase around the house! So Dr. Stoller found a good obedience trainer and also started Tia in dog agility classes to try to harness all that extra energy.
It became immediately evident that this was one smart and talented dog. Tia enjoyed both the obedience and agility work, and the training created a very special bond between owner and dog. Tia and Dr. Stoller started competing in Rally Obedience Shows in the fall of 2013. Rally Obedience is a competition sport in which the team (owner and dog) follows a course of 18-20 exercises and they are judged on the precision and speed with which they complete the course. There are a variety of different difficulty levels and ways to achieve ‘titles’ in the sport. After competing for only three months Tia ended 2013 as the 3rd best dog in the national ranking of Rally Obedience Level 2. Tia and Dr. Stoller are proud of their ribbons and awards, but it’s the fun time they spend together that is the true reward.
