Resources for those trained in EMDR

Last month a remarkable number of EMDR News readers clicked through to the book listings that I mentioned in the EMDR News.

This month I want to mention the full text article I wrote in 1995 available as a free resource to EMDR trained clinicians "Case Formulation: Strategies and Criteria for Selection of Negative and Positive Cognitions In EMDR."

January EMDR Research News

In the books section of the January EMDR Research news you will find a link to Tal Croitoru's The EMDR Revolution: Change Your Life One Memory At A Time (The Client's Guide) just published in January 2014.

This month, there are five new research articles indexed in the EMDR Research News. One of the articles includes the full text of a treatment manual for the use of EMDR therapy as part of the treatment of acute and post-traumatic stress disorders following multiple shocks from implantable cardiac defibrillators.

EMDR for Cardiac Events

The treatment manual mentioned above provides an excellent follow up to the 2011 open access Arabia et al. "EMDR for survivors of life-threatening cardiac events: Results of a pilot study" in the Journal of EMDR Practice and Research.

Those who share my interest in applying EMDR to cardiac events may also want to read the PLOSone open access article from 2012 Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Prevalence and Risk of Recurrence in Acute Coronary Syndrome Patients: A Meta-analytic Review which found a doubling of the risk of recurrence in acute coronary syndrome patients with clinically significant PTSD symptoms relative to patients without PTSD symptoms.

With EMDR therapy such an effective, brief, and manualized treatment, cardiac patients deserve to be offered this potentially life extending treatment. Let the cardiologists in your community know that you can help make a difference for their patients.

"You see things; and you say, 'Why?' But I dream things that never were; and I say, "Why not?"" - George Bernard Shaw

Atypical visual processing in posttraumatic stress disorder
Many patients with Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) feel overwhelmed in situations with high levels of sensory input, as in crowded situations with complex sensory characteristics. These difficulties might be related to subtle sensory processing deficits similar to those that have been found for sounds in electrophysiological studies.

Research exploring the Inner Voice and ideas from Julian Jaynes "The Origin of Consciousness in the Breakdown of the Bicameral Mind."

How Emotions Are Mapped in the Body
Researchers found that the most common emotions trigger strong bodily sensations, and the bodily maps of these sensations were topographically different for different emotions. The sensation patterns were, however, consistent across different West European and East Asian cultures, highlighting that emotions and their corresponding bodily sensation patterns have a biological basis.
