Long Beach Sierra Club Announces Endorsements for Long Beach Mayor and City Council

The Sierra Club advocates air and water that is safe for us, better public transportation, renewable energy, water and energy conservation and green collar jobs.

The Sierra Club looks for candidates that demonstrate their commitment to being a strong and consistent advocate for environmental preservation. We are pleased to announce that we are endorsing the following candidates in the April 8th, 2014 election:

* City Council District 1 – Lena Gonzalez

* City Council District 7 – Joan Greenwood

* City Council District 9 – Rex Richardson

* City Attorney – James Johnson

* Mayor – Assemblymember Bonnie Lowenthal

We’re delighted to see a number of excellent candidates in this year’s race. Several of these candidates for Mayor have been supported by the Sierra Club in the past, but Assemblymember Bonnie Lowenthal stood out from the rest. In her time as Assemblymember, Bonnie consistently earned high ratings on the annual Sierra Club legislator scorecard. Because of her decades of environmental work, we enthusiastically endorse Bonnie Lowenthal for mayor. See below for ways to support her campaign.

The Sierra Club Needs You

Your local Sierra Club is looking for volunteers. Volunteering with us is fun and rewarding, and we have opportunities to match every level of interest.

One of the easiest ways to help out is to help us greet new members at our monthly meetings. We meet just about every 1st Wednesday of the month with an interesting presentation on a different topic; just helping make sure our new members have signed in is a great way to make everyone feel welcome.

We also need volunteers that have an interest or expertise in specific conservation areas. Would you like to help raise awareness locally on behalf of the Sierra Club about the significant impact our food choice have on the environment? Maybe your focus is transportation? You can help us track and get involved in key issues related to mass transit, bicycling, and other transportation issues.

We are also looking for volunteers willing to serve on the leadership of the Sierra Club, such as a Membership Chair to help us continue to build our membership, Programs Chair to help us find interesting monthly presentations, and even our Executive Committee that makes decisions about all of the work of our local Sierra Club group.

If you want to do more to help the Sierra Club explore, enjoy and protect the planet, contact Gabrielle Weeks, our volunteer chair, at gweeks@angeles.sierraclub.org.

LTC Seminar: Dare To Lead!!

Becoming a Sierra Club outings leader starts with curiosity and a love of the outdoors. What better way to step up and lead than by taking advantage of the training opportunities that the Angeles Chapter's Leadership Training Committee provides each year?

As home to one of the largest outings programs on the planet, the Sierra Club Angeles Chapter's many groups, sections and committees sponsor thousands of trips ranging from beach barbecues to mountaineering expeditions. You can take the first step toward becoming a leader by attending a class offered on Saturday, April 12 at Eaton Canyon Nature Center in Pasadena.

The seminar covers all the basics of leadership. Experienced leaders will tell you how to plan a trip, prevent problems on the trail and make sure that everyone – including you – has a great time. They’ll also explain good conservation and safety practices. And they’ll give you tips for getting your “O” rating quickly and then, if you choose, pursuing more advanced ratings. If you are a member of the Long Beach Group and want advice and guidance on becoming a leader, contact Sharon Moore at justslm@earthlink.net.

The all-day class costs $25. The application is online at angeles.sierraclub.org/ltc. At this same site, you can pore over more of LTC's upcoming offerings, which are also on the Schedule of Activities page.

Mail the application and check, payable to Sierra Club, to Steve Botan, LTC Registrar, 18816 Thornwood Circle, Huntington Beach 92646. You also can reach Steve by email (ltcregistrar@hundredpeaks.org) or by phone (714-321-1296).

Applications and checks are due March 29, 2014.

Scholarships are available for those with financial need. Apply to LTC Chair Anne Marie Richardson AMLeadership@gmail.com
