Racial Justice/Public Policy Guided Video Dialogue of Mighty Times: The Children's March
Monday, January 20, Noon-2:00 pm
YWCA of Minneapolis Downtown
Mighty Times: Children's March documentary, a short film about the children's march in Birmingham, Alabama, during the civil rights movement. Guided in circle dialogue by YWCA Racial Justice Facilitators, we will process the film and its impressions on our lives. Coming full circle, you will hear about YWCA of Minneapolis' Early Childhood Awareness Month and our advocacy role. This event is open to all ages 12 and up. Space is limited; RSVP as soon as possible.

The Glory of Minnesota? One Version of History in Public Art
Through a virtual tour of art at the Minnesota Sate Capitol, Jim Bear Jacobs will reveal a narrative of white male privilege. The presentation invites participants to ask “how are Native Americans portrayed, and what does it say about our history and current relationships?” Jim Bear Jacobs is the visionary founder of Healing Minnesota Stories and a member of the Mohican Nation. He has degrees in Pastoral Studies and Christian Theology.

The Doctrine of Discovery

Sheldon Wolfchild, an actor, director, and member of the Lower Sioux Indian Community, will present the film and participate in discussion. The film focuses on the incredibly powerful and little discussed Doctrine of Christian Discovery, the religious justification early explorers used to claim lands from indigenous nations and peoples. RSVP to co-convener Tom Duke so they can plan for seating and refreshments.

An Evening with Ka Vang: Artivism — Creating Community Through the Arts
Spend an evening creating art with Ka Vang, Twin Cities Hmong American writer, educator, and “artivist.” During the course of the evening, Vang will read selections from her work, guide the audience in creating a community poem, and discuss how she uses her writings as a tool for social justice and to fight against injustice and oppression. Through interactive exercises, audience members will be encouraged to reimagine common folktales, stories, and poems in innovative ways.
