Colonialism in Context THIS weekend

For many thinkers, teachers and creators around the world, colonialism and post- colonialism have been useful lenses to better understand history and to enact lasting justice.

PANEL DISCUSSION Friday, May 3

Year of the Dakota: Remembering, Honoring and Truthtelling

This conference collaboration provides the opportunity to learn and discuss with historians, elders, activists, legal scholars and allies to discuss the impact of the the 1805 Treaty and historic events and legacies the 1862 Dakota-US war.

Keynote speakers include Dr. Chris Mato Nunpa (retired professor, elder and activist, Yellow Medicine Community), Dr. Neil McKay (Dakota language instructor, University of MN, Spirit Lake Country), and Dr. Waziyatawin (scholar, activist, Yellow Medicine Community).

Outlawing Shakespeare: Battle for the Tucson Mind is a documentary that focuses on the elimination of the Mexican American Studies program within the Tucson Unified School District (TUSD) in Arizona. Under a federal de-segregation decree, Mexican American Studies was created and was successful at improving academic achievement for Latino students in Tucson until earlier in 2012 when it was shut down by the TUSD School Board. Directed and produced by Fernando James Orozco.

The film will be followed by a panel discussion with local educators, students and community activists.

For more than a decade, diverse community leaders -- from business, education, arts, and community service -- have come together participate in dialogues on race and commit to eliminating racism at the annual It’s Time to Talk: Forums on Race program. There are many ways to get involved, from being an event sponsor to hosting a table, from attending as an individual to being trained as a racial justice facilitator.
