Closure at Nokuse

This month, we headed out into the Florida Panhandle to share our program on "How to Hike the Florida Trail" with the FTA Panhandle Chapter in Panama City and to do a little hiking on local trails. Unfortunately, we found Pine Log too flooded to cross, and Nokuse closed (see below). But we did enjoy a couple of day hikes on the FT at Econfina Creek while visiting business owners to verify information for the guidebook and to talk about the Florida Trail.

If you're new to this mailing list and didn't see prior updates, please read these first:

UPDATES, APRIL 2014
.
BIG CYPRESS SECTION
All of the Florida Trail north of I-75 is currently closed due to an ongoing fire affecting the Blue Loop to the east of Nobles Road. Keep up with updates on the Big Cypress National Preserve website.

CENTRAL PANHANDLE
p144. Pine Log State Forest has been experiencing higher than normal water levels this hiking season. Expect deep water wading along sections of the FT.

p145. Mile 939.8, Bruce: because of the closure of the eastern side of Nokuse through this summer, thru and section hikers must continue west along SR 20 to roadwalk around the section. Read about the closure and how to get around it.

EGLIN
p147. The new segment of trail leading from Nokuse north paralleling US 331 officially opens on National Trails Day, June 7, with a special celebration.

We have some more finer details about service changes to share, but will do that next month, when we take all of this season's updates and put them on a single web page for your reference.

Cheers, Sandy & John
