One Week in the Life of Five Horses

It was another exciting week in the world of rescue as our humane officer tackled another case of animal neglect.

This time, horses at a property for equine pasture boarding were underweight according to the citizen complaint. When our officer arrived, the problems were readily visible. Three of the five horses had withers, ribs and hip bones protruding from under thick winter coats.

This draft horse is 600 pounds underweight and very sick!!

One magnificent Belgian Draft horse was so hungry that he choked on his hay and was rushed to emergency. There, veterinarians pieced together the history of how this horse became 600 pounds underweight.

"There was very little evidence of any digested hay in this horse's fecal sample. It was black and looked to be mostly dirt and sediment" said humane officer Frieborn.

Needless to say, his owners are devastated that this has happened to him. He's now getting the care he needs at a new facility and we're hoping he makes a full recovery.

Meanwhile, there were four more needing to be rescued.

On Friday another veterinarian confirmed that one of the remaining two boarded horses was not being fed an appropriate amount of food to sustain an ideal body weight. Our officer is still working with the horse owner to find suitable pasture to move these horses out of their current location.

The remaining two horses were relinquished to HSSF. These two horses were abandoned on this property in October. One of them is significantly underweight. They are currently in foster care until space at a horse rescue center opens.

As with all these cases of animal cruelty, we will recommend to the Placer County District Attorney's office that charges are filed.

Horse Rescue Brings Generous Donation

When Sue Stack learned of the Humane Society of the Sierra Foothill’s rescue of Mariah, a thirty-three year old Mustang, and the need for months of costly care, she took action. Ms. Stack stepped up to sponsor Mariah with a very generous donation that will pay for Mariah’s rehabilitation from long-standing neglect. Sue's thoughtful gift enables HSSF to provide extra food, medical care and shelter during Mariah’s recovery period.

The Humane Society of the Sierra Foothills, enforces animal cruelty laws first by working with animal owners to remedy bad situations. When owners do not comply, the Humane Society has full legal authority to obtain a warrant, remove the animals, and work with the district attorney’s office to help prosecute.

“Donations like this are critical in bringing these debilitated animals back to good health” said Marilyn Jasper, president of the Humane Society. “Like all humane societies and SPCA’s we are an independent non-profit organization not affiliated with any other entity. Sponsors and donors like Sue are important to continue our rescue work.”

You can join Sue in this special gift of giving to help support the care of other animals at the Humane Society of the Sierra Foothills. More information on sponsoring below.
