One Week in the Life of Five Horses

It was another exciting week in the world of rescue as our humane officer tackled another case of animal neglect.

This time, horses at a property for equine pasture boarding were underweight according to the citizen complaint. When our officer arrived, the problems were readily visible. Three of the five horses had withers, ribs and hip bones protruding from under thick winter coats.

Meanwhile, there were four more needing to be rescued.

On Friday another veterinarian confirmed that one of the remaining two boarded horses was not being fed an appropriate amount of food to sustain an ideal body weight. Our officer is still working with the horse owner to find suitable pasture to move these horses out of their current location.

The Humane Society of the Sierra Foothills, enforces animal cruelty laws first by working with animal owners to remedy bad situations. When owners do not comply, the Humane Society has full legal authority to obtain a warrant, remove the animals, and work with the district attorney’s office to help prosecute.
