I mentioned in last week's email that we are working on a solution to dramatically improve the quality of our livestreamed events. I am happy to say that we are up and running via our new livestream channel and will be able to start broadcasting events directly to your computer, smart phone, or tablet anywhere in the world.

We will test it tonight in back-to-back events starting with Joshua Meier's photography show, All Things Passing, opening in the Warner Gallery at 6:45 EST and then again with physics professor and Wired.com blogger Rhett Allain discussing how physics is part of our everyday lives at 7:30 EST in Engelhard Hall.

RhettAllain

Dr. Rhett Allain (and Davis Hammond '12) has been working with students the past few days in the physics lab.

I apologize in advance if it crashes and is a monumental failure. I'll just do what we ask our students to do — dust myself off and go back to the drawing board. If it works, then please encourage your student to join me in broadcasting games and other events throughout the year as a color analyst, play-by-play announcer, or camera person!

I encourage you to please continue sending me feedback or suggestions as we continue to do our best to capture the spirit and energy on campus.

All the best,
Will Robinson '97

Friday Evening North Star Grill Event

There is one addition to the schedule this year. Several parents have organized a casual gathering at the North Star Grill (Middletown Crossing, 380 E. Main Street) at 9:00p.m. on Friday 10/26 and everyone is invited. The event is designed for parents to unwind and get to know one another at a place convenient to campus. North Star has set aside its private banquet room and pledged to donate 10% of any food sales from the gathering to the St. Andrew's Annual Fund.

A Note About Teacher Conferences

Sign-up sheets for teacher conferences will go up this week to allow students to sign up for meetings. Please note that each teacher only has 40 different time slots, but most likely teach more than 40 students. That means that not all parents will have a scheduled time slot with every teacher. Don't worry! Teachers will be around all weekend and are also available for phone conferences. Please contact them directly if you are interested in scheduling a meeting if it doesn't work out over the weekend.

Change of Plans?

Ideally students will plan ahead and go through the Dean's Office if they plan to spend the night off-campus during Parents Weekend. If, however, your student decides at the last minute to spend the night off campus with you please send an email Sharon Phelan (sphelan@standrews-de.org) and Ana Ramirez (aramirez@standrews-de.org) letting them know. Thank you!

Halimah Delaine Prado '93 Delivers Women's Network Weekend Keynote in Engelhard Hall

Students are still talking about Halimah Delaine Prado's talk from last Friday night. It is now available as a downloadable mp3 or to watch via our YouTube channel (click below). Here is one review from Janee Dennis '14:

"I was in awe of her ability to capture such a young audience and convey such a beautiful message. Her stories of self-assurance and persistence illustrated qualities that we should all demonstrate in our lives. Her message was inspiring to both women and men of all ages."

This week's mini-lecture focused on the importance of "margin of error" and how to factor margin of error into your analysis of a poll. She will explain the importance of bias as it impacts a poll's sampling and its survey questions in the next two weeks.

Thank you, Mollie!

Congratulations to Mollie Gillespie '14 for offering the first student-submitted "Ethical Question of the Week." Mollie asked the community the following question:

Students and faculty will look to add to that total while showing support for those affected by HIV/AIDS during this Sunday's AIDS Walk Philly. The walk is one of the largest of its kind in the world and has been a staple on the St. Andrew's calendar for almost 20 years.
