Going Coastal

It's been an interesting week exploring a different side of Florida than we're used to roaming, as part of a visit to the Panhandle Chapter of the Florida Trail Association to share our take on How to Hike the Florida Trail. Thanks to some help from our friends at the Panama City Beach Convention & Visitors Bureau, we were able to extend our planned stay in their area to research trails, parks, and beaches up and down their coastline and north to the Florida Trail paralleling SR 20.

Dune walks are a common theme at parks along this coast. Although most of the natural dunes are off-limits for walking - especially now, during shorebird season - we still found nature trails at St. Andrews, Camp Helen, and Grayton Beach that let you wander over the dunes and marvel at sand as white as snow. Short walks at Pine Log State Forest (very wet right now), Conservation Park, Fred Brown Park, and Oaks by the Bay let us sample a variety of habitats not far from the Gulf of Mexico.

Families at St Andrews

Family exploring the turpentine still at St. Andrews State Park

While most folks think of Panama City Beach and Spring Break as a natural pairing, we're here to find nature, and we're not the only ones. We ran into into dozens of families out biking or taking their kids out on short hikes to get a taste of natural Florida. At St. Andrews State Park, one young boy and his dad were intent on finding an alligator. The name of the trail was Alligator Lake, after all, and they'd come all the way from Michigan and hadn't seen one. John tried hard to spot a gator for them, but no luck. At Grayton Beach State Park, we watched a dad and his two kids come bursting out of the oak hammock and down the dunes, having a blast. Fifteen minutes later, we ran across them on another part of the trail system, this time with mom and the littlest one being carried along.

What brings families to the beach is time spent together doing something fun. It's heartening to see so many immersing in nature together to make memories for the future, so today's children will still have that fondness for the parks they visited in their youth.

Cheers, Sandy & John

PS. Beyond the image galleries below, we'll be sharing much more from our explorations on our website over the next few weeks. Our thanks to Pinnacle Port for providing us complimentary accommodations at their complex along the shores of Lake Powell, from where we could walk into Camp Helen State Park during our visit. It was truly an excellent base camp for us nature lovers.
