St. Andrew's Named Green Ribbon School!

Dear St. Andrew's Families,

We were thrilled to learn this week that St. Andrew's was named the first school in Delaware and among the first three boarding schools in the country to earn the designation as a Green Ribbon School from the U.S. Department of Education.

The award honors schools for exemplary efforts to reduce environmental impact and utility costs, promote better health and ensure effective environmental education, including civics and green career pathways. You can read our detailed application put together by Director of Sustainability Diana Burk here.

Delaware's DNREC Secretary Collin O'Mara has visited St. Andrew's several times in the past few years, including leading a roundtable discussion with students last fall to learn more about the School's commitment to sustainability. “St. Andrew’s truly walks the talk," O'Mara said. "Over the past few years, they have emerged as a national leader in demonstrating environmental stewardship, reducing one's ecological footprint and inspiring students to create a more sustainable future.

“The U.S. Green Ribbon School award today recognizes what we in Delaware already know — that St. Andrew’s commitment to sustainability is a model that we hope to replicate over and over again.”

We are so thankful to so many on campus and beyond who made this recognition possible, and whose work and dedication suggest we are only at the beginning of our efforts to live more sustainably.

All the best,
Will Robinson '97

DANCE WEEKEND

St. Andrew's counter-culture community is on full display this weekend as the senior class hosts Dance Weekend. Students are in the process of wrapping up Casino Night in the dining hall tonight after a picnic dinner on the front lawn. Tomorrow night the boys will cook dinner for their dates in faculty homes before heading to the front lawn for music and dancing under a tent.

The meeting was one of several ongoing this spring as part of a new Innovative Teaching Collaborative, bringing teachers together from across disciplines to share best practices and test new ideas.

Student-Driven Opportunity

Students continue to take the initiative to share their passions with the community. Lily Shao '16 and Sam Fox '14 (right) are trying to start a competitive debate team.

Zoe Scurletis '14 is looking for students to help her support Change.org.

Economics Club leaders Sangwon Shim '14 and Jay Lee '14 educated the community on the basics of microfinance at School Meeting this week and encouraged us to join the SAS team at Kiva.org.

Longtime girls crew coach and teacher Cal Hurtt '90 was honored last weekend with the dedication of the new girls' crew shell in his honor. Captain Alexandra Porrazzo '13 spoke on behalf of the crew program at the dedication: "I am excited to see how far we can push ourselves as the season proceeds and I am honored to continue doing this in a boat named after such an influential member of the crew program's history."

Aggy Barnowski '13 Finishes First

We are so proud of the work Aggy Barnowski '13 has put into her running this spring. Her long runs in and around Middletown helped propel her to first place in her age group and 13th overall at the Kent Island Metric Marathon (16.1 miles) with a blistering time of 2:18:17. Faculty member Anna Hastings helped coach Aggy this spring and ran the race in full St. Andrew's regalia.
