"It's Fixable": A Very Personal Column for Mental Health Awareness Month

And announcing my partnership with Friends 4 Recovery, a Chesterfield Whole Health Center

Hi everyone!

My humor column this month is funny (I think, but again, I may be biased), but it has a serious point, anchored in my own experience: if you feel like you are having mental health issues, get help.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month. Studies show that one in four Americans will experience a serious mental health issue during their lives.

In my speaking and writing, I talk about strategies for sanity in a world gone nuts – things like going with the flow, maintaining perspective and, of course, keeping your sense of humor.

But there are times when we cannot overcome overwhelming feelings of vulnerability and stress, or when a brain disorder (which is a physical ailment in the same way that heart disease is a physical ailment) can cause depression, panic, anxiety or other symptoms. In those cases, “positive thinking” suggestions from a motivational speaker (no matter how incredibly funny he is) isn’t going to cut it.

When that happens, don’t mess around. Get help. Because it's fixable.

Unfortunately, not everyone knows it's fixable, or they feel there may be a stigma or shame associated with getting help. That is why I wrote this column, and why I am proud to announce my partnership with Friends 4 Recovery, a whole health center in Chesterfield, Virginia focused on mental health and recovery.

See below for more details on my partnership with Friends 4 Recovery, as well as my May column and Mental Health Awareness Month.

Thank you, and have a happy and healthy May!

Thanks!

Chuck

I am the 25%.

At first it was just a quirk. And kind of funny.

It began in my late 20s. Usually before a big weekend, I would notice my every sniffle, and I would worry that I was getting sick. In fact, I’d worry so much that I actually would get sick.

I began flushing public toilets with my foot instead of my hand. I also began using paper towel to open the bathroom door when I was done. Although I still refuse to concede that I was being overly germ-sensitive, since half the guys leaving the bathroom walk right past the sink without washing their hands. And besides, now there are trash cans by the doors of bathrooms because everybody does it. So THERE.

I began making regular trips to the emergency room, sure I was having a heart attack. After 30 minutes of running on the stress-test treadmill in a suit and tie, I’d be sent home with a clean bill of health and a pitted shirt.

What was going on? Find out in my May Chesterfield Observer column that - not coincidentally - is running during Mental Health Awareness Month: "I am the 25%"

If the folks in your organization, company or association are grappling with the craziness of this world, maybe I can help.
In my speaking, I provide organizations and their people with strategies for sanity in this world gone nuts. With lots of humor, high energy and fun, I cover topics such as:

Keeping Balance & Perspective Amidst (Hurricane-Strength) Winds of Change – Chuck taps his own wide variety of hilarious business and life experiences and misadventures, as well as the wisdom of Henry David Thoreau, to present a funny take on dealing with change and keeping one’s balance and perspective amidst planetary insanity.

E Pluribus Humor: Diversity, Community and Getting the Best Solutions – Chuck Hansen (disclaimer: no Latin scholar) uses hilarious insights and anecdotes from his “diverse” career and life experiences to demonstrate the fact that true diversity connects communities in a common cause to arrive at the best solutions. With humor and positivity, Chuck explores how conformity in thinking, uniformity of background and “conventional wisdom” combine to limit the ability of organizations and individuals to innovate and succeed.

Living and Leaving the Caribbean Dream: Surprising Truths about Setting Goals – Chuck samples from his several lifetimes’ worth of wildly varied and often humorous experiences – from crossing the Atlantic in a small sailboat, to Caribbean saloon bouncer, to speechwriter for national political figures and Fortune 500 company leaders, to blackjack dealer, donut maker and private detective – to present some surprising truths about setting and achieving goals.
