Along for the Ride

I got a call from John from the trail. He was hurting, and more than a little shaken by getting run off the road by an out-of-control driver. He'll share that story in his own words on the blog. But it was enough for me to get in the car and drive to Okeechobee to meet him. As we settled into a local hotel, we discovered most of the 2013 FT Hike gang was there too, for a zero day.

Being able to meet the group and hang out on a zero day - which I know from our past experience is always hectic - was a blast. We spent the next day doing a long day hike, filling in one of my missing links, after which we helped shuffle support vans around to keep Chuck Norris, the hike leader, on track. What a surprise to have our friend Kevin track us down during our day hike!

As the last of the backpackers melted into the woods, we headed for home. John will be back on the trail again soon, but for now, those feet and lungs need a good rest.

Cheers, Sandra (and John)

The Florida Trail Guide

Working on books is keeping both of us hopping! Here's your introduction to the forthcoming Florida Trail Guide. The book is still a work-in-progress, and we expect it to be over the course of this winter/spring hiking season, as we're actively revisiting and remapping portions of the trail. Here's what you can expect to see in this book:

Data charts outlining stops along the Florida Trail – campsites, water, access points, nearby towns, scenic and historic spots -with mileage and easy-to-scan symbols.
Simple maps that reflect the information on the data charts, showing the trail location in relation to stops.
Detailed information on resupply stops, including town maps, contact information for hiker services, and brief reviews of services
Suggested side trips from the trail to unique and unusual destinations in Florida.
Information on outfitters and shuttle providers along the trail
Information on hiking in Florida, including plants and animals, weather, and water issues
Information on “How to Hike the Florida Trail,” including permits needed, recommended gear, and suggestions from hikers who have successfully completed the trail

If you'd like to be informed of updates regarding the release of this book, sign up for our Florida Trail Guide mailing list. Emails will be very infrequent.
