The worldwide tour is coordinated by the Anne Frank House and is directed at young people from 11 to 18 years old. “The diary of Anne Frank is a book with a strong message which is still relevant for all young people throughout the world: ‘learn to live together with other communities and respect each other’s culture and habits.’ And that is what we want to explain in this exhibition,” according to Ronald Leopold, general director of the Anne Frank Foundation. “We want to pass on the message to the younger generation. International Tall Ship Festival

Dutch Tall Ships departing Rotterdam. (photo by Gerda Poot)

On the 27th of October in the year 1628 a proud crew of Dutch VOC ship ‘Batavia’ departed from The Netherlands for their destination; The Dutch East Indies. Unfortunately, they never reached their final destination. The ship wrecked at the west coast of Australia, on the Abrolhos Islands.

Almost 400 years later, a small fleet of Dutch Tall Ships is following the footsteps of this historic voyage. Now equipped with modern tools to avoid the reefs they are going to rediscover the area where this tragedy took place.

Dutch Tall Ships
Three-masted schooner ‘Oosterschelde’ (1918), bark ‘Europa’ (1911) and two mast Ketch ‘Tecla’ (1916) departed from The Netherlands last year for an epic voyage around the world. Following the old trade routes and passing notorious capes, they sail around the world in a small fleet, just like in ancient times. The complete voyage takes around 1,5 years. Guests can join the professional crew on all legs of this circumnavigation.

Sailing along the Australian coast
If you are interested in joining in on a leg, there is the possibility to step aboard for one of the remaining legs along the Australian coast, from Melbourne, Hobart and Sydney or even on to New Zealand. Information on the sailing vessels and their voyage can be found on www.dutchtallships.com.

International Tall Ship Festival Program:
More than 20 tall ships from around the world will gather in Australia for the International Tall Ship Festival and the Sydney Auckland Tall Ship Regatta – the first event of its kind in Australasia.
The three month Festival Program will see Tall Ships celebrating with Parades of Sail, street parades and festivals in several cities, including the International Fleet Review – celebrating 100 years since the first entry of the Royal Australian Navy’s Fleet into Sydney Harbour.

Melbourne 09 - 14 September 2013
Hobart 20 - 25 September 2013
Sydney 03 - 10 October 2013
Auckland 25 - 28 October 2013

VERMEER AND MUSIC: THE ART OF LOVE AND LEISURE

Discover works of love and leisure by the painter of Girl with the Pearl Earring

Johannes Vermeer is the third artist profiled in 2013 as part of the acclaimed cinema-exclusive event series EXHIBITION: GREAT ON SCREEN. A global revolution showcasing the world’s greatest fine art exhibitions, uniquely created exclusively for cinema audiences worldwide.

VERMEER AND MUSIC, direct from the National Gallery, London, will screen for a strictly limited season from Saturday 19 October in Australian cinemas.

The National Gallery, London, is offering a fresh look at one of the most startling and fascinating artists of all – Johannes Vermeer, painter of the famous Girl with a Pearl Earring. The National Gallery has chosen to focus on Vermeer’s relationship with music. It is one of the most popular themes of Dutch painting and reveals an enormous amount about the sitter and the society they lived in. New research, revealed for the first time at this exhibition, shows how his technique and materials affected his works.

Tim Marlow goes beyond the exhibition to tell the entire story of Vermeer’s life – and, in doing so, shows in fabulous HD detail many other of the artist’s captivating works.

For those inspired by the 2003 film, Girl with a Pearl Earring, starring Colin Firth and Scarlett Johansson, this new, cinematic exploration will take their enjoyment and fascination of Vermeer’s life and work to a new level.

Tickets are on sale now from participating cinemas: www.exhibitiononscreen.com

Walking Men Worldwide™

We see them everyday – the “Walking Man” that tells us it’s safe to cross. It’s an international celebrity, a graphic sign that transcends all languages, appearing in various forms around the world, adding its own unique character to our urban identity.

Walking Men Worldwide™ is a photographic collage of 99 different pedestrian traffic light icons that represent the ‘walking man’ around the world. How each country represents the ‘walking man’ is intriguing and sometimes surprising:
* In Odense, Denmark, the silhouette of Hans Christian Anderson decorates traffic lights;
* Children’s book and TV character Miffy has appeared in traffic lights in The Netherlands (see picture);
* The Amplemann (little traffic light man) is the symbolic figure of traffic lights in Berlin;
* In several European cities, traffic light icons are represented by females.

Walking Men Worldwide™ can be seen at various locations in the Sydney CBD, such as: George Street, College Street, Elizabeth Street, Oxford Street, William Street, Darlinghurst Road, Redfern Street, Glebe Point Road.

Art & About Sydney is a collaborative arts festival where every street, laneway, building site, intersection and thoroughfare is a canvas for creation and storytelling. The festival runs from 20 September to 20 October 2013. For more information, visit artandabout.com.au.

Oproep stageplek fysiotherapie
