What Does God Seek?

By Lance Mosher

There is a passage in the New Testament that I have read literally hundreds of times. It wasn’t until a few days ago that I paid particular attention to one simple word. Seeks.

John 4:23-24: But an hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for such people the Father seeks to be His worshipers. God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.

Usually, when I read this passage, I focus on the words spirit, truth, and true worshipers. Beyond that, I also have now really noticed that our Father in heaven seeks to be worshiped. We can see that played out throughout the ages. God obviously informed the Patriarchs about worship (Genesis 4:3-4; 22).When He ushered in His covenant through Moses, God put the Levitical priesthood in place to give the nation of Israel an avenue of worship (Leviticus 1). In the New Testament era (today), God has made it so that every single Christian serves as a priest in His kingdom and can go directly to God in worship (1 Peter 2:4-10; Revelation 1:6). God has always provided an avenue for His creation to deliver what He desires.

Likewise, it should be our desire to worship God. In return for His goodness, we should worship Him. In return for His love, we should worship Him. In return for life, we should worship Him. In return for salvation, we should worship Him.

Psalm 122:1: I was glad when they said to me, “Let us go to the house of the Lord.”

God is worthy of it all. Every breath we take is a gift from Him.

Isaiah 6:3: Holy, Holy, Holy, is the Lord of hosts, The whole earth is full of His glory.

James 1:17: Every good thing given and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shifting shadow.

When you worship God, be sure to do it with your whole heart and according to the commandments of God, not the traditions of men (Mark 7:6-8). God seeks worship to be done in spirit and in truth; however, the lesson for us today is that He seeks such worship. Will you give Him what He desires?

Matthew 18:20: For where two or three have gathered together in My name, I am there in their midst.
