Dear Families,
Chinese teacher Chiachyi Chiu gave our Wednesday Night Chapel Talk this week by sharing how her experiences as a young teacher and mother help her appreciate and love her students.

As a parent of young boys I often think what it would be like to drop my sons off at a boarding school and make the long drive home. I wouldn't be very good at my job if I didn't believe there were a million good reasons to make such a sacrifice, but I always imagine such a moment would still bring a measure of sadness.

Listening to Chiachyi's words on Wednesday night reminded me that as long as people like her and the long list of our colleagues are there for the hand-off, my kids (and me) will be alright.

You can listen to Chiachyi's talk by clicking here.

All the best,

Will Slotnick Spends the Week On Campus

Will Slotnick, Founder and Director of the Wellness Collaborative, was our guest on campus this week as he met with students and faculty to lead discussions on how we can promote healthy minds and bodies. In a meeting with the faculty he shared that the United States is experiencing historic lows of substance abuse among teens, but historically high rates of adolescent stress. Will explained his approach as "focusing on the wellness aspect – to help students identify the stressors in their life and the tools they can use to manage it."

Will has a wonderful list of books he recommends for people looking to learn more about managing stress on his website.

There's not much these people won't do for your children.

International Festival This Weekend

Students have organized the annual International Festival for this weekend with a film festival, special dinner, and dance set for Saturday night. A few brave members of the faculty answered the call from international students to help with today's announcement by exhibiting their "Gangnam Style" (Wikipedia definition). You can watch them by clicking on the video on the right (extra credit for spotting dance teacher Avi Gold twice).

"Lean On Me" Part 2

I realized too late last week that I forgot to link the video of students singing in the Main Common Room (a not uncommon event), so we are reintroducing it again this week. Sorry about that!

The Collaborating Classroom

Faculty continue to find imaginative ways to cross-pollinate the curriculum. Fresh off taking art students to The Barnes Foundation in Philadelphia, John McGiff shared his insights into the intersection of American history and the evolution of art to U.S. History 3/4 students on Wednesday night.

Planes, Trains, & Automobiles

David Miller works very hard to help coordinate travel plans for students. He will be reaching out to them this week to take reservations for the various buses and rides to train stations and airports. Please remind your child to let David (a.k.a. "Profe") know if they need these kinds of travel accommodations.
