MESSAGE FROM MARISSA

Screen shot 2011-01-19 at 1.09.09 PM

Dear Bay Area Green Tour Enthusiasts,

Welcome to 2011! It appears that the world has gotten off to a challenging start. With the current news of earthquakes, floods, violence, oil spills, record snowfalls, birds falling out of the sky and fish dying in mass quantities, it would be easy to fall into a state of despair. All of this is very serious and needs our attention.

So how do we go on when things seem hopeless? At Bay Area Green Tours our mission is to turn our attention to positive solutions that bring to light amazing projects and people that are illuminating a path forward with innovation, passion and solutions.

We recommend taking a look at Utne Reader’s 2010 Nov/Dec issue which spotlights key innovators and solutions that are making a difference. Two of our friends are featured in this issue. (more info below).

Marissa LaMagna Executive Director

Our Friends in the News

25 Visionaries Who Are Changing Your World

*Woody Tasch*
Our friend [Woody Tasch,](http://www.utne.com/Politics/Utne-Reader-Visionaries-Woody-Tasch-Slow-Money-Alliance.aspx) who is a fellow member of the Sustainable Enterprise Cluster at the Brower Center, and his Slow Money Alliance have created a movement that connects responsible investors with sustainable, local food production. He is the author of the book: Slow Money: Investing as if Food, Farms, and Fertility Mattered (Chelsea Green 2009)

Michelle Ajamian

One of my oldest and dearest friends is also featured in this issue: sustainable farmer, [Michelle Ajamian](http://www.utne.com/Politics/Utne-Reader-Visionaries-Michelle-Ajamian-Brandon-Jaeger-Staple-Foods.aspx?page=2). She along with her partner, Brandon Jaeger, created the Appalachian Staple Foods Collaborative in conjunction with the Athens Foundation to cultivate sustainable farming practices in their region. Their work is helping to increase an emphasis on building community support while decreasing the amount of pesticides and other harmful chemicals that are seeping into local water sheds and into our bodies.

It is people like this that are working towards solutions, who are helping to pave the way to a brighter and sustainable future for all.
