The Netherlands is the guest 'Focus' country in the forthcoming ARCOmadrid 2012 Fair. Within this context, Latitudes has been invited to curate the representation of Dutch art institutions. Hosted within a specially-commissioned structure in Hall 10, 'The Netherlands Assembly / Asamblea de los Países Bajos' will consist of the accumulation of over 30 hourly talks, readings, statements, artist presentations, performances and screenings from art spaces, research initiatives and artists, forming a series of documented 'depositions' analysing artistic practices and cultural policies from the Dutch perspective. Also this month: Three juries
Latitudes is involved in the three juries this month: selecting visual arts, education, editorial, research and curatorial proposals for the 2012 Open Call at the Sala d'Art Jove. We are also part of the GAC Awards jury given by the Catalan Gallery Association (Award ceremony: 31 January 2012 at MACBA); and are part of the Curatorial Open Call 2012 jury which invites individuals or collectives to submit a proposal for curating an exhibition between June and July of 2012 at NoguerasBlanchard in Barcelona. Application deadline: 31 December 2011.
Fermín Jiménez Landa (1979 Pamplona. Lives between Pamplona, Valencia and Barcelona) & Lee Welch (1975, Louisville. Lives in Rotterdam) did not know each other before the invitation to participate in Amikejo. As if engaged in international diplomacy, the artists have had to get to know each other personally and artistically before issuing what might be regarded as a joint statement based on what they have agreed and negotiated, in the form of an exhibition. Jiménez Landa & Welch have chosen to establish their collaboration in relation to the notion of the micro-nation and devices which delineate sovereignty – borders, stamps, anthems, flags, and so on.
