The special selection of limited-edition framed posters from the World A Reggae exhibition (2012, National Gallery of Jamaica) now on display in the library at Strawberry Hill are now available to the public through a silent auction format to benefit Alpha Boys School. The public is invited to brunch at Strawberry Hill on Sunday, February 24 to bid on these unique posters whichrepresent both juried and specially contributed designs to the International Reggae Poster Contest (IRPC) including five posters that have never been available previously.
Posters by IRPC co-founder Michael Thompson, 2012 contest winner Alon Braier as well as award-winning designs never before available to the public by Elizabeth Mason, Tomasz Bartz, Oliver Batho, Gamma Jam Jam, Chris Walker are taking bids. The silent auction at Strawberry Hill will benefit Alpha Boys School, a residential vocational school for at risk boys in Kingston, Jamaica run by the Sisters of Mercy since 1890. In addition to tailoring, agriculture and woodworking, Alpha’s music training program has launched the careers of an all-star list of ska, rocksteady, dub and reggae stars including Don Drummond, Leroy ‘Horsemouth’ Wallace and Leroy Smart. Today, the government of Jamaica provides about half Alpha’s operating budget. The balance is made up from self-help projects, donations and volunteers. The International Reggae Poster Contest and Strawberry Hill are pleased to honor Alpha’s past while contributing to its future.
It is fitting that Strawberry Hill, a signature property developed by Chris Blackwell, one of Jamaica's most influential musical pioneers, is partnering with Alpha Boys School, one of the founding institutions of Jamaican popular music, and the International Reggae Poster Contest, an innovative visionary effort connecting music and the visual arts with a civic purpose. From its inception, the International Reggae Poster Contest has made it its mission to support the work of local Jamaican community initiatives and Alpha Boys School in particular.

The International Reggae Poster Contest seeks to build awareness about reggae culture and celebrate its global achievements around the world. Founded by Michael Thompson and Maria Papaefstathiou, the first contest, held in 2012, collected a total of 1,142 designs from 80 countries. A distinguished panel of judges known for their creativity and commitment to design was assembled to select contest winners from an exclusive group. It is from this group that the limited edition posters included in the Strawberry Hill silent auction are now available to the public for the first time ever.
The 2013 International Reggae Poster Contest is now underway. The long term civic goal of the International Reggae Poster Contest is to create a vehicle toward realizing a Reggae Hall of Fame in Jamaica and housed within a Frank Gehry designed building. A monument to reggae and Jamaica's achievements, a Reggae Hall of Fame will also be a testament to the living heritage of reggae music and culture.
