Dear St. Andrew's Families,

I've been trying to find a way to provide a lighter opening to this shortened week's email and the pounding rain over the last three days has only intensified my desire. I'm going to keep my part short and pass the baton to Malcolm Brown '14 and his team of producers of the first ever St. Andrew's reality show: St. Andrew's Survivor.

To provide some context, it's exactly like the Survivor you can watch on CBS, but with a smaller budget and a better host. Please enjoy the first two episodes of Season 2.

We hope to see you next weekend,

Parents Weekend

Parents Weekend is only one week away and we can't wait to welcome you! Comment reports from teachers and letters from advisors will be sent to you via email next week in advance of the weekend. Students will review these reports with their advisors at School.

If you are able to join us October 18-20, please encourage your child to sign up for teacher conferences on Saturday and Sunday, as available. Sign-up is available at teachers' classrooms. Teachers are also available for informal conversation throughout the weekend.

If you have not done so already, please view the Parents Weekend schedule and register on our website. Also, if you are planning to take your child off campus for the night, please email Lisa Henson to let her know.

Programming Update for Bicyclists!

Faculty members Nate Crimmins and Joshua Meier are planning a bicycle ride on Sunday afternoon to cap off the weekend. Please email Nate or Josh if a 25-mile ride at a moderate pace sounds like a nice way to spend part of your afternoon.

Joel Salatin and Jaryd Jones '17

Joel Salatin is On Campus!

Students are excited to kick off the Fall Festival this weekend with the 2013 Environmental Lecture provided by the renowned author and activist-farmer Joel Salatin. He arrived on campus early this morning and participated in biology classes before speaking in Chapel, taking a tour of the School farm and participating in a Land Use Committee meeting.

We will livestream his talk tonight and then Joel will again join classes tomorrow morning. One of the sweetest moments of the day came from Jaryd Jones '17 (left) who approached Joel to personally thank him for being an inspiration in his life. Jaryd read Michael Pollan's The Omnivore's Dilemma last year and credits Joel's work with making him think more intentionally about his food and the environment.

In the Classroom

Nate Crimmins took the last two periods before Long Weekend to bring his IV form religious studies class to his apartment to work on a production of the Enuma Elish, an ancient Babylonian/Mesopotamian creation narrative composed around the 18th-16th c. BCE (lost to human history until the 19th c. CE, actually).

Dorm Life

One day Nate's apartment is the stage for an ancient creation narrative, the next it plays host to a costume party a full three weeks before Halloween.

Life of the Mind

Classics chair Chris Childers continues to find time to pursue his own scholarly work outside of teaching. He currently has two Propertius translations published in KIN, an online literary magazine. You can view the fruits of his labor here.

As translator, he is hard at work on a book of Latin and Greek Lyric Poetry from Archilochus to Martial, under contract with Penguin Classics, and has translations forthcoming from PN Review, Parnassus, Arion, and others. In 2013 he was a finalist for the Ruth Lilly fellowship from the Poetry Foundation.

Alumni Arts Festival — November 8-9, 2013

For the past few years, we have invited alumni from a specific field to return to campus to share their careers and offer workshops to students. We focused on business and leadership last year with Halimah Delaine Prado '93, Director of Legal at Google, Inc., providing a keynote address followed by opportunities to meet alumni from Microsoft, DLA Piper, J. Crew, The Corcoran Group, Och-Ziff Capital Management and more.

This year, we chose to celebrate the arts. There are more than 25 alumni artists sharing work in the Warner Gallery and more than 30 workshops for students focused on the visual and performing arts. We hope you feel welcome to join us for one of the most inspiring weekends of the year. Please visit our website for more information.

Bonus Photo!

Students and faculty who donated blood during our blood drive last spring celebrated a St. Andrew's award from the Blood Bank of Delmarva this week. Those 17-years old and above came together to provide 60 donations of usable blood during last year's drive. We'll do it again this spring with the hope of increasing our impact.

Bonus Photos II & III

Thank you to the trustees, alumni and parents who joined us in celebrating the life of the School during the Stewardship Dinner last Friday night. The Class of 2014 sends their appreciation and loved meeting you during the opening reception. (Admittedly, some could use your help with shirt, tie, and belt combinations).
