Donna Macy

For the month of November, we were delighted to have a visitor from Marysville, Washington. She is Donna Macy, a friend of mine from New Life Church in Everett. Donna had been to Kenya in 1994 with a short-term missions team, and had always wanted to see more of Africa.

We were able to take Donna to two national parks in Uganda, and to Rwanda for a week. She also ministered in our church and home groups in our local villages.

Because one of our goals in ministry has always been to develop self-sufficiency and spiritual maturity in our New Life Centre Church congregation, Donna and I came up with the idea of offering the gifts she brought for people to sell as a fundraiser for our church. The people are very poor, but we have a mighty God who promises to meet our needs, as we trust in Him.

Fundraiser auction taking place under tarpaulin roof

God has spoken to my heart about our New Life Centre Church being as Paul spoke of the Macedonian church: Out of the most severe trial, their overflowing joy and their extreme poverty welled up in rich generosity… they gave themselves first to the Lord and then to us in keeping with God’s will. (2 Corinthians 8: 2, 5) Our plans were further developed to include the people also giving things to sell, and all proceeds going to put a roof on our unfinished church. We have been using tarpaulins, but with a roof, our church ministries can greatly expand.

The people have brought produce from their gardens, which has sold very well. So far we have sold enough things from the proceeds of Donna’s gifts and the villagers’ produce, to finish one wall and be able to purchase 2 loads of bricks and 2 loads of sand, towards completing preparations for putting on the roof. The people want the work to begin immediately as money is raised – they want their church built!

God can do incredible things when we get out of His way and let Him work as He wills. After several weeks of these ongoing Sunday afternoon fundraiser sales, I have witnessed the people rearranging how we set up the church each Sunday, scrubbing the one couch we have in the front, and letting me know where they wanted me to sit now. At the beginning of the after-service fundraiser, children began coming to me with coins in their hands, wanting to buy the bottles of bubbles we had from Donna’s gifts.

Surprisingly, as the auctioning of items for sale began, we also had people coming to the front of the church for prayer! So in the middle of an auction, with children blowing bubbles over the congregation, we had prayer for various needy members: a retarded new mother, an elderly man with a heparin lock (an intravenous access) in the back of his hand, a woman newly recommitted to Christ wanting to be filled with the Holy Spirit, several sick children…

In the coming months I will be publishing photos of this building endeavor.

CLICK to read "Off to Africa!"

It is my pleasure to announce that in late March, my granddaughter Emilee Bailey, and my daughter Julee Bailey, will be traveling to Uganda for 3 weeks. Emilee is a senior at Liberty Bell High school in Winthrop, Washington. For her senior project she is going to paint a mural on the wall(s) of New Life Centre Church. Please click on their link to the left to read Emilee's newsletter and to contribute to the costs of her trip if you desire. This project is like no other one ever done by Liberty Bell seniors. It will be a unique cross-cultural experience for Emilee as she works with some of church members to get the mural done. She will also be documenting it with photos and video
