First Global View

When I was introduced to Stuart Brand’s “Whole Earth Catalog” in 1968 it was the first time I realized that there were other people who were thinking the way I was in terms of feeling connected with each other, the earth, and the greater human spirit. The catalog contained innovative and alternative ideas about solar, farming, and construction in one concise resource that hadn’t been assembled before. The catalog’s first cover photograph offered a whole new perspective of our world. It was planting a seed of a global perspective (pre- Internet!) which would connect the “Whole Earth”.

I hungrily pored over this pioneering publication, embracing and being inspired by the astonishing variety of new ideas and solutions. Now, because of the Internet, (which feels to me like a quantum expansion of my initial experience of the Whole Earth Catalog,) activists and entrepreneurs can communicate new ideas instantaneously; mimeograph machines have gone the way of the slide rule and Arab revolutions which in the past would have taken years to spark now ignite at lightning speed. We have the tools at hand to make giant leaps and little time left to fulfill the mission of a generation that first saw the problem of global warming, overpopulation, pollution, and this is just the tip of the melting iceberg.

Other early visionaries like Rachel Carson and Buckminister Fuller started the conversation fifty years ago to reverse insurmountable environmental challenges. Now, Al Gore warns us that we don’t have much time left to positively shift the future of our planet and humanity.

Gore believes that we are at the tipping point and now is the time to step up individually and become more proactive. The unusual weather around the world is a constant reminder that something is out of balance. One way to bolster our personal and collective spirits is to take pro-active steps to help our chances for a prosperous and healthy future.

Some times we all feel overwhelmed by the enormity of what we must surmount in order to survive as a race and a planet. We are indeed at the tipping point and it’s the time for each of us to step up individually and become more proactive. The regular weather catastrophes and irregularities around the world are a constant reminder that something is very, very wrong. One way to bolster our personal and collective spirit in moments of overwhelm is to take concrete steps to help support our chances for a prosperous and healthy future.

Today, with hope, we offer you two specific ways to do this:

FOUR YEARS GO (4YG)
Here is a perfect example of how the Internet connects us instantly to people around the planet who are committed to personally take the steps necessary to focus on change.
4YG is a campaign to shift humanity’s course toward a just, fulfilling and sustainable future by the end of 2014. Through this visionary campaign, people around the world are being invited to stand together and take courageous actions to bring about a future worth having. Four Years Go (4YG) is not a new organization, but a collective goal for every organization, every man, woman, child, worker, student, profession, and generation. We invite you to take the 4YG pledge to make changes which will help us all. The idea is that we have four years left to make vital changes as a human family. If we fail to do so our chances for a healthy future for future generations is bleak. Please help us promote 4YG by declaring your commitment. It’s easy:
Visit FOUR YEARS GO
Please join countless luminaries, leading organizations, and Bay Area Green Tours by making a pledge and adding your name.

Free Climate Action Workshop co-hosted by Bay Area Green Tours and the Berkeley Ecology Center. Led by Climate Action Coordinator, the fabulous Debra Berliner, MPH. We will meet at The David Brower Center with Bay Area Green Tours associates.

At these workshops you will:
- Receive information and ideas for taking action to reduce your ecological footprint, facilitate

community building, and drive political action on climate change
- Create a measurable action plan (the scope is entirely up to you!)
- Benefit from the support, wisdom, and experience of fellow participants, and resources from the Ecology Center

The workshop is offered free (other than the cost of optional workbooks). By participating in all three sessions, you'll be given free membership to the Ecology Center for a year if you have not previously been a member.

Please contact Debra for info. about the date of this event and other details, at: (510) 548-2220, x 240 or debra@ecologycenter.org

We'll picnic in the Bloomfield Cherry Orchard and enjoy a wine tasting in a lovely scenic spot, with beautiful Mount Diablo in the background. Reports from the Field

Living Social

Catherine Weis from Local Social had a chance to board the Bay Area Green Tours bus recently for a tour of organic, local, and sustainable farms. Here's a snippet of what was reported about her experience: "We are so lucky to live in an area that is rich in agriculture and strong in progressive thinking, and it was a treat for us to have the opportunity to see just what goes into growing and raising the food that we eat. Bay Area Green Tours is dedicated toward helping us understand local sustainability in hopes that it will inspire and empower us to take better care of the world we live in. Who couldn’t agree with that mission? Their tours range from Renewable Energy to Sustainable Foods to Green Collar Jobs."

BAGT News

Berkeley High School's Green Academy

KateTrimlettUrbanOre

Danielle Stinson, our fabulous Educational Tour Manager, reports about our most recent Berkeley High School Sustainability Tour at the end of May:

Bay Area Green Tours facilitated two back to back Educational Tours for students at Berkeley High School's Green Academy, one focused on "Alternative Energy" and the other on "ReThinking Waste." Each tour uniquely catered to the interests of the teachers and students. The Alternative Energy tour started with a walk through Berkeley to the Missing Link Bicycle Coop, to explore local bike resources and gain an introduction to the reality of a cooperative business structure. Then we took the BART into San Francisco to visit the PG&E Energy Center, which was an excellent place to learn about where our energy comes from, as well as tips about how important it is to reduce consumption during peak hours.

The following day we held the ReThinking Waste Tour. Our first stop: the Oakland Technology Exchange, where students saw the impressive way that this business reaches out to the community, in an effort to provide both education and refurbished computers to volunteers. Next we visited Ohmega Salvage where we heard about the long standing history of this business, which has been successfully reducing building material waste since the 60's. Our final tour stop was the West County Wastewater District in Richmond. Here the students got a close up view of the water treatment process and became keenly aware of the ways they can assist in improving water quality at their homes. This treatment plant is also a model of success in its reduction of energy costs, since it currently hosts the largest sun-tracking solar field in the entire US, supplying about 35% of the facility's power!

As the semester comes to an close for the summer, we eagerly seek new ideas and possible tour stops for Berkeley High and other schools in the Fall. The importance of sharing progressive models and ideas with the youth is of course paramount to our culture's shifting towards a more sustainable future. If you have tour stops to recommend, or schools which might like to explore our tour offerings, please contact Monique@BayAreaGreenTours.org -- with as much advance notice as possible. See you next semester!!

How can companies create and maintain the physical, mental, and social well being of their employees? How does the well-being of workers impact business? What are the key principles for ensuring the sustainability of workers? Issues such as stress and work life balance will be addressed. Sustainability works, but are we working sustainably?

The Clean Air Act and Global Warming: How it works, why we need it, and what you can do to support it

Date: Wednesday, June 22
Time: 7-9pm
Location: 2530 San Pablo Ave, near Dwight Way, Berkeley. Accessible by the 49 and 72 AC Transit bus lines
Cost: Free
For more info: debra@ecologycenter.org, 510 548-2220, x240, www.ecologycenter.org

Join the Center for Biological Diversity and the Ecology Center for a presentation on the Clean Air Act, our best hope against climate change. Signed into law by Richard Nixon in 1970, the Clean Air Act has protected the air we breathe for four decades. It is the United States' most important and successful law for controlling air pollution and, if used effectively, could reduce greenhouse gases to 350 parts per million, the level determined safe by climate scientists. The Obama administration began to use the Clean Air Act to limit carbon dioxide emissions this year, and immediately faced a multitude of attacks in Congress. Come learn about how the Clean Air Act works, the threats it faces, and how we can use it to protect our planet and our future. Following a presentation, we'll engage in discussion around questions such as: How can we successfully compel government to use existing laws or tools effectively? How can we push for aggressive climate policy in the face of budget cuts and political resistance
